New York State teacher centers are funded by grants from the New York State Education Department's Office of Curriculum and Instruction, which is part of the state budget. Policy Boards made up of a majority of NYSUT members plan appropriate programming according to the professional learning needs of their constituents.
The state’s network of 123 Teacher Centers provide direct training and support to classroom teachers to enhance their practice in order to help students develop the skills to maximize their success in college, career and community. To accomplish this, Teacher Centers cultivate collaborations with BOCES, Higher Education and other Teacher Centers.
There are seven regions in the state. The Williamsville Teacher Center is part of the FarWest Teacher Center Region.
Established in 1992, the Williamsville Teacher Center services employees of the Williamsville Central School District, as well as the thirteen non-public schools located with the district's boundaries. The Center has a high level of support and cooperation with the Williamsville Central School District which has a robust professional development program.
The Williamsville Teacher Center policy board sees our role as providing opportunities for teachers to initiate new instructional technology in our case studies and workshops to develop effective uses of the resources. The center strives to share best practices and strategies to enhance the student learning process and strengthen the foundations of the teacher. The focus in not on the technology, but rather the effective teaching strategies that enhance learning in the classroom. Our case studies, workshops and professional learning opportunity support have been effective in demonstrating the learning value of instructional technology resources, which has led the district to take over the initiatives and provide the resources for more classrooms.
Our focus this year, we will continue to focus on emerging instructional technology best practices and strategies in most of our case studies, workshops and learning opportunities or materials provided to our center members.
The Williamsville Central School district is fortunate to have a robust professional development program with a full-time Staff Development Instructional Specialist. The Williamsville Teacher Center works collaboratively with this department to supplement and support the wide variety of courses and workshops being offered to teachers. Further collaborative meetings with instructional specialists in the content areas help to determine programs and activities which would support our teachers as they deepen their content knowledge and implement the Next Generation New York State Learning Standards into their instructional practices.
The program goals for the school year focus on professional development which enhances the content knowledge of teachers, helps teachers understand and apply the NYS P-12 Learning Standards to instruction and ongoing assessment of student learning, helps teachers effectively integrate technology to support student achievement.
