2021 State Solo & Small Ensemble Contest

Important: This year's contest has been turned into a virtual event via the state music association, IHSMA. We are waiting on more details and will post and communicate those as soon as we have them. We *may* try to have some sort of "home" contest where students can still perform live for family/friends, but all those details are in the very beginning stages. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate these changes.

If you are curious how a "normal" contest runs, and how the process works, read the information from the 2019 contest below. 2021 student preparation and scoring are the same, just the presentation format is different.

(NOTE: This information below is for the 2019 Solo/Ensemble festival. The 2021 contest is virtual and will have different information)

Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held on Saturday, March 30th at North Cedar high school (address is 400 Ball St., Clarence, IA, 52216). This is an all-day event and parents are welcome to attend. There is a suggestion donation of $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for students.

Students will work with Mrs. Berte and then eventually their accompanist to prepare 1-2 pieces of standard solo or choral literature for a judge. The judge will then award the solo or ensemble a rating of Division I (Superior), Division II (Excellent), Division III (Good), Division IV (Fair) or Division V (Poor) and provide comments justifying said ratings.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students of all ability levels to improve their musicianship skills. Ensemble and solo literature is tailored specifically to the students' strengths and opportunities for growth. Plus, it is an experience that fosters camaraderie through performance, respectful listening, and support.
