Liza J. jacoby

Hello, there!

My name is Liza and I just graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Philosophy, with Highest Honors in Mathematics. At Williams, I was the president of the Williams student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics and I also ran the Student Mathematics and Statistics Advisory Board. This past April I was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and in the fall I will be starting at UC Berkeley to pursue my doctorate in mathematics.

My main research interests are in topology and geometry; you can find one of my most recent submissions –– a combinatorial project in tiling theory –– here.

As for my recent projects, in the spring of 2021 I engaged in an independent study advised by Dr. John Wiltshire-Gordon experimenting with a new pedagogical approach to singular cohomology, and last summer, Dr. Colin Adams and I worked on classifying tilings of the n-tuple branched cover of the 2-sphere with two branch points. To do so, we began tackling the classification of circumscribable star polyhedra. This past May, I concluded my senior thesis in symbolic dynamics, advised by Dr. Cesar Silva.

Here is my CV. Links and abstracts to my written work can be found under Research.

(And this cutie with me in the photo to the left is my dog, Callie.)

Outside of my mathematical endeavors, you'll probably find me outside –– on a mountain or off in the forest. Here I am in Williamstown foraging for lion's mane mushrooms!

During the school year, though, you'd often find me at the track. I ran mid-distance for the Williams track & field team, specializing in the 600m and 800m. To the left is me running the first leg of the 4x800 relay at the 2022 Indoor DIII New England Championship.
