Cost of Williams, Revenue Sources and the  POWER OF PHILANTHROPY

Provost and Class of 1955 Professor of History Eiko Siniawer is committed to providing information about the college's financial model.  See how her and Mike Wagner, VP for Finance & Operations, talk about it by clicking on the video and/or presentation above. Several other reports and presentations that she has given are publicly available here.

Top-notch college education is expensive. This academic year, we invested $145,000 in each of our students. 62% of that spending went toward compensating our employees. Williams has the lowest student-to-faculty ratio in the country (7:1), which enables us to mount a rich curriculum and offer highly personalized instruction in the form of tutorials, lab work, honors theses, and small seminars.

There are three primary revenue sources that supply the funds required to educate our students: 1) ~5% endowment withdrawal (56%), 2) tuition (28%) and 3) annual giving. During 2023 fiscal year, the Alumni Fund alone brought in $13.5 million in revenue - the equivalent of an additional $270 million endowment.

The Power of Philanthropy

The difference between the $145,000 that we spend on each student and the $83,818 that we charge for tuition and fees reflects a $61,182 annual subsidy for every full-pay student. Plus, Williams is committed to need-based aid and has one of the most generous and comprehensive financial aid programs in the country, providing 52% of our students with an average aid package of over $50,000. All of this leaves a $183 million annual gap (over 6% of our endowment).  To maintain the real purchasing power of our endowment in perpetuity, we limit our annual spending of the endowment to 5% and annual giving fills the gap. Without the financial support of current and past alumni, Williams could not fulfill its commitment to deliver the best undergraduate education in the world.

Williams

7:1 faculty to student ratio, the lowest in the country

79 tutorials offered during the 2020 academic year

41 percent of students conduct research with faculty

100 percent of demonstrated financial aid met and provides all textbooks and course materials to all receiving aid

Top rankings - Williams does not publicize or promote these rankings in the belief that "the best college" is the one that fits the unique talents, accomplishments, passions, and dreams of each particular student. The algorithms used by publications to determine their rankings can also change over time. We share this conviction with peer colleges and universities, who've all agreed not to refer to ordinal rankings in promotional materials.
