Research Connections

A celebration of work by affiliates of Carleton College's Summer Mathematics Program

Call for Submissions

We have received preliminary approval by the Mathematical Association of America to put together a volume highlighting the work of individuals connected to Carleton College's Summer Mathematics Program (SMP). We hope you will consider submitting an article for possible inclusion. Priority will be given to authors who complete an initial statement of interest (https://goo.gl/forms/jpModPyBOby43wSo1 ) by October 15, 2017 but all articles will be peer reviewed. Article submissions are due March 15, 2018.

The goals of this volume are to provide accessible introductions to various topics in math and statistics, introduce readers to a wide spectrum of career paths, and honor the work of Deanna and Steve by highlighting the accomplishments of SMP community members.

Details:

  • Anyone with a connection to SMP is invited to submit an article for consideration. This includes former participants, professors, and TAs. We would like to represent a variety of career paths, and thus seek articles from researchers in academia, industry, and government, as well as current graduate students. Topics can come from pure math, applied math, statistics, operations research, etc.
  • Articles should give an accessible introduction to a particular sub-field and situate and highlight the author's contributions to that sub-field.
  • Articles should be 10-15 pages long (4000-6000 words) and should be aimed at junior and senior undergraduate math majors. Authors can assume readers have had an introductory course in most standard topics.
  • In addition, authors are asked to provide a short (no more than 3 pages), stand alone biography describing their career trajectory. This biography should be approached from a storytelling rather than credential-listing point of view. What would you tell an undergraduate or graduate student about your career path and current profession? How did you get where you are? What influenced your decisions along the way? What role did SMP play in your trajectory? Ideally, we would like to include photos of the authors from their time at SMP and now.
  • We suggest the following article organization to help create consistency throughout the volume.
    1. Biography / Career trajectory
    2. Abstract, and statement of assumed background
    3. Introduction to particular sub-field
    4. Contributions, applications, and/or impacts of your work in this sub-field
    5. Ideas for future study
    6. References

Final selection of articles for inclusion will be made through a peer review process by members of the editorial board and outside referees. Please email us at smp.maa.volume@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you are unable to contribute currently, but would like to be updated as the project develops.

Sincerely,

Editors Abra Brisbin (SMP TA '04), Karen Lange (SMP '99), Erin McNicholas (SMP '95), and Emilie Purvine (SMP '03)
