Costumes
Aside from using magnificent cinematic techniques to enrich the story and provide deep character portrayal. The movie "Gladiator" uses costumes to portray the characteristics of one's inner character outward and enhance the character portrayal for the viewers to see and understand. This is evident in characters such as Commodus with his lavish sets of armor that represent his "deadly sins" and evil nature.
We can see this in the scenes after Commodus returns to Rome. During this time, Commodus wears a set of black and white armor decorated with gold. This armor set is used to represent the inner nature of Commodus and his status as royalty and emperor of Rome. The use of white and gold in the costume represents his high status as Emperor but is also used to represent his greedy, bold, and confident nature. Commodus wears this armor during his visit to the forum in front of the senators and acts as if the senate must unwillingly bow to him. The costume separates him from the more modestly dressed senators and is used to show that Commodus wants to be above all, even the senate, and have all the power.
The portrayal of Commodus' character changes with the implementation of his next set of armor. Commodus begins to wear an armor which is completely black with some slight hints of gold. This costume is used to represent his decline into evil and his separation from humanity as he becomes crazy and animal-like. The use of pure black represents the pure evil nature of Commodus that has completely taken over him and presents him as some sort of deadly beast like a "black bear" or "black wolf" that has taken the seat of the emperor. The continued use of gold helps show his royal status and continues presenting Commodus as emperor.
Commodus' final costume which can be seen in the final fight scene between him and Maximus is also used to represent the inner nature of Commodus. The costume is a set of completely white armor and is used by Commodus as an attempt at portraying himself as god-like and heroic. This costume differs from the black armor in scenes prior as it is trying to disassociate evil with Commodus but in actuality it promotes the evil nature of Commodus as he tries to hide it from the view of others. The costume also contains no gold and is a hint towards Commodus no longer being presented and viewed as emperor of Rome.
Costumes have helped represent the nature of the characters in the movie "Gladiator" by presenting their inner nature outwards so that it is clear and visible and enhance the portrayal of a character to the viewers.
