In the time of the 1910's to 1960's we see an influx of epic movies based on the infamous Roman empire. The sword and sandal genre has brought us many iconic movies like "Ben Hur", "Spartacus", and "Quo Vadis?", but it seemed to had died out by the mid to late 1960's. That was until Ridley Scotts "Gladiator." The movie had everything an old school sword and sandal had, while brining a modern twist. War, lust, and a hero brought new life to a once dead genre.
But even though "Gladiator" is a modern sword and sandal film, does it change the sometimes stereotypical tropes that we see in this genre? The new and improved ideologies of this film has given a new way of looking at tired and not politically correct character types and reinventing them to fit a modern pallet.
