To jump into your own nature journal, you will need a place to record your writing and observations. You can do this on your device with our Nature Journal Template below, or a notebook of your own. Tap into your artistic side and use art materials to draw your surroundings while journaling!
To begin, it’s best to find a comfortable spot outside. Take a few minutes to take in your surroundings. Once you’re ready, feel free to start writing. This is your journal, there is no right or wrong way to do it! For inspiration, here are a few prompts to get the writing juices flowing…
Write down 5 observations (use all your senses) - try to make them as detailed as you can!
Close your eyes for 3 minutes - journal what you experienced using senses other than sight.
What’s your favorite season? Why?
Pick any tree or plant near you. Describe it using as much imagery as you can.
Write a short poem about how nature makes you feel.
Think back. What’s your first memory in nature?
Using prior knowledge and creativity, how can you help the environment?
What is your favorite outdoor activity? Why?
When was your last wildlife spotting? Do you have one that was most memorable?
Who do you like to enjoy nature with?
How does your mindset change in nature?
What didn't you like about the sounds or sights you observed?
Practice Makes Perfect. It’s important to remember that writing is a muscle! It’s okay if you only journal for 5 minutes--every bit counts! I suggest you aim to write and/or draw for 30-45 minutes, just let your mind take you!
