To investigate access, we will use data to answer the following questions:
1) How does access to CS differ between Elementary School, Middle School, and High School experiences?
2) Are there disparities in access to advanced CS courses based on socio-economics, ethnicity, or exceptionality in our students for the reasons students choose to take CS?
Below, you will find three sets of data sets organized by grade band.
Key Conclusions:
Of all elementary schools, Duffy Elementary School is responsible for the highest percentage of students continuing on to study both computer science and AP computer science at the high school level.
Of all middle schools, Sedgwick Middle School is responsible for the highest percentage of students continuing on to study both computer science and AP computer science at the high school level.
Within our high schools, approximately 30% of Conard's population took at least one class in computer science and approximately 24% of Hall's population took at least one class in computer science.
In terms of diversity in 2020-21 CS classes based on elementary school population data, some key observations include:
Webster Hill sent 3 times as many African American students to CS than is expected based on Webster Hill's population.
Braeburn sent 12% more female students than expected. Braeburn and Morley were the only elementary schools who sent more females than expected based on their population.
Smith sent 38% more Latinx/Hispanic students than expected based on Smith's population.
In terms of diversity in 2020-21 CS classes based on middle school population data, some key observations include:
Bristow sent 4 times as many African American students to CS than is expected based on Bristow's population.
All middle schools sent fewer females than expected based on their populations. King Philip sent 22% less females than what was expected. Bristow sent 26% less than expected. Sedgwick sent 14% less than expected.
