What can we tell from these Reports?
The opposing pitcher (Kyle Freeland) in this instance has 2 breaking balls; a curveball and a Sweeper/SL. Although they are similar in velo, they are 2 distinct breaking balls and he clearly has a preferred choice between them. You will notice Freeland throws his CB almost a 1/4 of his total pitches (24.7 %) despite only throwing it for a strike at a 35% clip. On the contrary, the veteraned southpaw lands the SW/SL at a 53% strike rate; only throwing it for 16.7% of his his total pitches. Our hitters now know that the opponent SP for today tries to get Swing/miss & strikeouts via the CB as his "chase pitch". In order to throw a pitch that often despite the lack of being in the zone is a tip to all hitters that he is looking to get you to chase the CB out of the zone for a whif/chase.
How can our pitchers use opponents hitting data report to gain an edge?
Immediately I am able to see that this hitter although he has an above average hard hit % in college baseball, he shows the tendecy to chase some pitches out of the zone with a FB chase rate of 34% & chasing pitches out of the zone overall at a 32% clip, well above the desired average of 20%. The hitter also shows some major concern with the whiff rate on all pitches excluding a Fastball. The desired whiff rate/avg. would be around that 20% mark & you will notice here, Brown is north of that number in 3 offspeed pitching categories. Velo doesn't seem to be a problem for this hitter, rather the soft/breaking balls are what gives this otherwise talented hitter some fits.
Our Defense can benefit too?
Yes. Defensive alignments can be used to play into hitters strengths & weaknesses; as well as our strengths & weaknesses as a team defense. The hitter in the sample report hits fly balls at a 29% rate, his highest in any hitting result category. Do we need to shift the OF to the pullside? OR is he able to hit the ball in the air to all fields, BUT tends to be pull heavy on the Groundball? This is all information that we can be tracking & collecting on our opponents in todays technology era via plethora of devices including Hawkeye, Synergy, DiamondKast & so much more!
These models are based off a collection of data that can be easily obtained through pitch charting in game, synergy/Hawkeye/etc. to chart pitches post game, or simply entering into model/spreadsheet. You will notice several key data points that we are tracking on both pitchers & hitters of our opponents, giving our players the best chance to help them succeed at a sport that is built around failure!
