Simply put, students who study Earth-human interactions from a systems approach are better prepared to solve complex global problems. I structure my classes to introduce scientific concepts from an applied and interdisciplinary perspective and encourage students to consider the local consequences of global issues.
My responsibility, as a concerned scientist, skeptic, and educator is to introduce students to the importance of science and the scientific method. I help to prepare them to make scientifically literate decisions that are required for participation in civic and cultural affairs.
My goal is to prepare students for entry to the vanguard of globally-aware citizens tackling our most critical societal issues. To prepare students for this future, I view my goals in teaching as fourfold: 1) Enthusiastically and clearly present scientific information, 2) introduce students to scientific habits of mind and practice, 3) challenge students to work independently and, 4) hone students’ written and oral communication skills.
