This course is required for all freshmen. Students participate in a variety of types of writing including informal everyday writing, narrative writing, and essay writing. The writing process is heavily emphasized as writing lengthy essays and assignments is very new to many high school students. Students also read a variety of texts individually, in small groups, and as a class, and report on what they have read through book reviews and brief presentations. Students in English 9 learn the foundation level skills needed to be successful throughout their high school career and beyond.
Honors English 9 A/B

This course is a higher-level alternative to fulfill the English 9 requirement. As with English 9, students participate in a variety of types of writing including informal everyday writing, narrative writing, and essay writing, as well as reading a variety of texts, though they do so with increased emphasis on literary analysis and quality writing. Students in Honors English 9 learn, use, and expand upon foundation level skills at an accelerated rate to match the rigor and challenge Honors students are ready for. Recommended for students planning to take Honors English 10, college prep English, students who plan to pursue college after high school, or strong readers and writers that want to challenge themselves and refine those skills. It is recommended that students consult with their current English teacher prior to registering for this course.

This course is required for all sophomores. Students continue to build on the foundation level skills they learned in English 9 by continuing daily informal writing, narrative writing, and essay writing, but begin to learn more about writing for a variety of audiences as well as researching information needed to supplement and strengthen their writing. Students continue to read independently, in small groups, and as a class, and write book reviews as well as present on their thoughts. Additionally, presentations begin to extend to research and other learning. Reading skills are taken a step further in English 10 as students work on using reading strategies and resources to work through a difficult text. These additional skills encourage students to be aware of their audience in a variety of situations as well as develop an understanding of their own learning and thought processes.
Honors English 10 A/B

This course is a higher-level alternative to fulfill the English 10 requirement. Students will dive into more challenging texts and higher level writing skills for a variety of audiences. Honors English 10 students have more emphasis on individual advocacy and initiative in their learning, and are responsible for more of their own time management and pacing than in English 10. Recommended for students planning to take college prep English, students who plan to pursue college after high school, students that did not find English 9 challenging enough, or strong readers and writers that want to challenge themselves and refine those skills. It is recommended that students consult with their current English teacher prior to registering for this course.

A major component of this course focuses on the writing process, especially on the development of expository and persuasive writing. Students will develop writing skills through a variety of essay assignments and will prepare a formal research paper, building further skill in paraphrasing, summarizing, and properly citing source material. Research and organizational skills are emphasized. Students gain an understanding of the emerging literature as it connects with the people and events of world history through activities that enhance written and oral communication skills, group projects, and individual reading and research. Students will have exposure to novels read together as a class as well as those selected for individual reading. Oral communication activities may include interpretive readings/compilations of prose and poetry or more formal speeches such as the four-minute speech, oratory, or public address, to name a few. Oral communication activities will often be integrated in writing or literature units.
College Prep English Honors A/B

This course is a higher-level alternative to fulfill the English requirement.
This course is meant to prepare and challenge students who are college-bound. The curriculum is designed to introduce and handle themes which students are likely to encounter at a four-year university. Texts may include In Cold Blood (Truman Capote), Hamlet (Shakespeare), The Crucible (Arthur Miller), Cannery Row (Steinbeck), and Stranger in the Woods (Michael Finkel). A variety of shorter texts will also be featured. These will include short stories, poetry, and short plays. Writing will also be emphasized in this course. Students will be writing research papers, persuasive pieces, and narratives. In addition to this traditional English curriculum, students will also be writing college admissions essays, and filling out college admissions and scholarship applications.

Students will explore drama and theatre as another form of literature through an analytical perspective as well as a theatrical one. Students will look at all aspects of plays including interpretations of the words, as well as how it can then be translated to the stage.
