Suggested Packing List

Suggested Packing List:

In your travel pouch:

Passport

Cash *

Credit card or prepaid VISA cards (This would only be used for emergencies and airport use as credit cards are not widely accepted in rural areas or small businesses. There will most likely be fees for using such cards.)

*In Central America/Caribbean most places will accept U.S. currency. However they only accept newer bills smaller than $20!

$20.00 per day should be enough for you to buy a meal, water, and snacks throughout the day. (Some days you won’t have to spend any money for food. Other days you might have to buy 2 meals.)

However, if you want souvenirs or more snacks etc. I would bring more than that amount.

Suggested Clothing for each day:

Day 1: Traveling/Meeting Host Families

Please dress nicely. We are representing not only our school but our entire country! We will be meeting our host families when we arrive and we want to make a good impression. No sweatpants or athletic shorts!

Wear layers! Planes & airport temperatures can vary so make sure you have a light-weight jacket or something to put over your outfit.

Other suggestions...limit belts/jewelry for easy transition through TSA security!!!

Day 2: Walking Historical Colonial Zone/Shopping

Girls: Skirts/Sundresses/Capris

Boys: Nice Shorts (No athletic shorts!) & T-Shirt

Shoes: Comfortable shoes that you can walk around in

Day 3: Modern Zone Tour of Santo Domingo

Same as Day 2

Day 4: Cacao Plantation

We will not be in the center of town on this day so more comfortable clothing is fine. Just make sure shorts/skirts/dresses are not too short!

Day 5: Volunteering/Cave

Most schools require children to wear a uniform even if it is a public school. Dress comfortably but look nice and school appropriate! Also make sure your outfit is comfortable to run around in with the kiddos and to hike up to a cave.

Day 6: Traveling to the Beach/Zipline

Shorts are okay when staying at the beach!

Girls: No dresses or skirts on the zipline!

Day 7: Staying at the Beach

Beach attire.

Day 8: Traveling Home

Wear layers again and comfortable clothing is okay; just make sure you are presentable (i.e. no pjs/sweats)

Shoes:

Tennis shoes (some excursions require closed-toed shoes)

Sandals that can get wet and have good traction (Keens/chacos/tevas/Sanuks or the like are good options)

Flip flops/Slides

Extra Clothes/ Other Ideas:

Sweatshirt/lightweight zip up

Jeans

Extra swimming suit

Swimming suit cover-up for girls

Plastic bags for your wet items when traveling home

PJs that you would feel okay with your host family seeing you in!

Underwear

Socks

A small photo album of your home/family etc. to serve as a talking point with your host family.

A gift for the host family that the whole family can enjoy. (Cranberries or maple syrup from WI are good ideas!)
