8th Grade English Holocaust Project
8th-grade students are reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel. To further student's knowledge about the Holocaust they had the opportunity to virtually meet Donna Rosenblum. Ms. Rosenblum has been an educator for over 32 years- as a high school Social Studies teacher, a school librarian, Library Chairperson, and Supervisor. She works tirelessly to bring Holocaust education into school curriculums and library collections throughout Nassau County. She has conducted workshops for educators at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, Hofstra Summer Institute, and numerous other sites. Her 25 years of volunteerism at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, and the Holocaust Resource Center at Temple Judea, have given Ms. Rosenblum the opportunity to send an important and far-reaching message of tolerance to thousands.
8th-grade students in Mr. Schaumloffel and Mrs. Massaro's Social Studies class studied the events of WWI. Working with Westhampton Beach Historical Society, two special guests volunteered their time to share their knowledge about WWI with students.
The first guest was Peter Cuthbert. Mr. Cuthbert taught History for a total of 31 years, 30 of which were in WHB H.S. He has a total of 32 years service in the Army - 2 years active combat as a Lieutenant during the Korean War; 13 years in the National Guard and 17 years in US Army Reserves and his father-in-law served in WWI.
Our second guest Dorothy Berdinka Trustee/Education Coordinator WHB Historical Society:
Dorothy was a physical education teacher for 23 years at St. Isidore School in Riverhead and after retiring became the Education Coordinator for the Westhampton Beach Historical Society. Ms. Berdinka worked hard gathering resource information for their presentation.
Westhampton Beach Pubic Library Booktalk
At the beginning of the school year, our middle school library worked in collaboration with Westhampton Beach Public Library. Booktalks are a fun way to spread the love of reading, and Westhampton Beach Public Library Teen Librarians Ms. Victoria and Ms. Andrea provided our 8th-grade students with important information on how to access books from the public library during the Pandemic, and some of their favorite books!
