C229 Community Health and Population-Focused Nursing Field Experience

The Community Health and Population-Focused Nursing Field Experience introduces the student to the clinical aspects of health promotion and disease prevention in the community health environment. Students will focus upon the development of skills necessary to prioritize the global clinical needs of the community, nursing methodology, and resources to improve the health of the community. Students will also develop a potential social media campaign to promote population health and address primary prevention topic outcomes. In this field experience, the student will:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills by applying principles of community health nursing in the community setting aligning with the selected primary prevention topic.

  • Describe the completed field experience in a written assessment that will also outline recommendations to improve the community health concern using the nursing process.

  • Develop and recommend health promotion and disease prevention strategies for population groups.


The purpose of this field experience is to expose you to the practice of nursing care interventions focused on the community and a population as the patient. In this field experience, you will observe with a licensed registered nurse employed at a community facility to learn about the health concern you chose and the resources and services for care from their perspectives.

C229 Community Health Field Experience Consists of (65 Total Hours)

Students will complete direct hours with licensed registered nurse knowledgeable in the selected prevention topic. Use the list below to help identify a registered nurse and facility.


  • The course has total of 65 direct patient care hours (5 hours are completed from a local community assessment "Windshield Survey". ​

  • The 60 hours direct hours will be completed in the student’s community and should relate to the student’s field experience topic.​

  • Remember this is an interactive direct care experience – speak with patients, provide care, education, etc. - it is not simply observing or shadowing

Unacceptable Activities

Students are not permitted to document site visits or assessments, interviews, paid working time, work-related training, webinars, online courses, online training, in-person training or classes, continuing education units (CEUs), research hours, time spent writing the paper, time spent scheduling activities, unsupervised observations of people or patients, participation in or observation of sporting events, or in-person or online meetings. Students are not permitted to shadow or observe a professional or nonprofessional who is not a registered nurse.
