New York State - Canal Culture

The New York State Canal System, nicknamed "Clinton's Ditch" or "Clinton's Folly" after Governor DeWitt Clinton, was built by immigrant workers. Opening in 1825, the 363 miles of the Erie Canal became a transportation highway for westward expansion, with 50,000 depending on it for their income. It also became a new culture, with songs, folklore, floating houses, gambling, and entertainment. It is again becoming a vacation destination, with fishermen and cyclists replacing boats towed by mules.
