SciGirls Connect

SciGirls is designed to help preteen girls succeed in science and engineering. Each show starts with a scientific problem for girls to solve. These girls collaborate with professional scientists, working as citizen scientists to gather data. Their natural curiosity leads to new solutions. They think it's more fun to do science than read about it in a book. The girls featured on SciGirls often have some experience with the topic being studied on that show. Activity guides explore biology, physics, engineering, technology, health, and the environment. You can watch episodes of the show online.

Math Meets Biology

Grade Level:

To understand how biologists use mathematical tools to help with their research, explore the activities at the NRICH web site. You can examine data from a national bird watch program in the United Kingdom and learn about ecosystems by building a terrarium and studying the food web. Find out how to estimate a dolphin population and see how scientists figure how epidemics grow and die out. Take a look at the complicated math used when scientists study genomes.

After-School STEM Programs Inspire Kids To Keep Learning

Grade Level:

Engineering adventures done after school boost kids' interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEM clubs offer time for exploration, the celebration of failure, and no test pressure. When a mistake happens, it's time to figure out how to fix it. STEM programs boost teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving, and STEM proficiency. In this video, you will see students making a track for a marble, which must reach the goal in exactly a minute. They design a car that will protect a hard-boiled egg in a crash.

Plants

Grade Level:

How much do you know about plants? This interactive unit provides a comprehensive lesson on plants and how they make food. Start with the pre-test, which activates the other parts of the unit, including an introduction, story, modeling activities, math to create things like data charts and graphs, hands-on activities, a review activity, and post-test to see how much you learned about plants. You will watch and analyze videos, label pictures, and more. This interactive requires downloading the program, but the instructions are easy to follow. If you want to save your data, it requires a free registration.
