Compassion is in my opinion, one of the single most important qualities we can possess as human beings. It is defined as “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it” This basically means you are aware of hard things others are suffering through, and you want to help them. As Kiwi Kids, what could be more important than that?
Those who demonstrate the most compassion, are those who have the ability to imagine themselves in another persons’ circumstances or problem. They are the people who have perhaps never personally experienced something that another person is experiencing, yet are able to put themselves in that person’s place and imagine what it must feel like. Animals are themselves very compassionate creatures, and human beings can learn so much from them. Animals such as monkeys will help a fellow Capuchin even when they don’t have to.
Compassion is not something that is only appropriate if shown to others, it is necessary that we show compassion towards ourselves too. If we make an effort to be kind to other people, why not be kind to ourselves. Sometimes when I feel bad for myself or am giving myself a hard time for something I have done, I try and imagine the advice I would give a friend if they came to me with this problem. Most of the time, I know that I would tell them they are being far, far, far too harsh on themselves. That is why compassion is important in so many different ways. Another example, is being kind to someone who you disagree with. It is natural that we have different opinions, and it is awesome when we express them. But if we can only relate to others based on our own personal feelings, thoughts, opinions, and circumstances, how compassionate are we really being? At the end of the day, compassion is the ability to walk a mile in another persons’ shoes, not our own….
Let’s start at home first. Sometimes, we go out of our way to be understanding, kind and compassionate to strangers and acquaintances. Yet are we as quick to do this with the people who are closest to us? There is an awesome saying that says, “If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love.” I’m working on this one!
Being less judgmental is another way we can be more compassionate. At the end of the day, we have no idea what someone else may be dealing with. They may have just lost a loved one, got a bad grade at school, or just be feeling sick and down. Since we really have no idea what people are trying to cope with, we should try and be mindful of these possibilities. We could try and think of what we might need from others if we were dealing with those same kinds of situations.
How many more reasons do I need to convince you? I feel like I could go on forever! So let me say it one more time: Compassion IS Important. You are important, your family is important, your friends are important and strangers you meet every day are important. The way we can show this to each other is… you guessed it… COMPASSION.
Critical Questions:
Why do you think compassion is important? What good does it bring to the world?
What good does compassion bring to the world? Think both directly and indirectly.
Does showing compassion to others change the way people treat us.
Practical Thinking Questions:
How are five ways you can show compassion in your everyday life?
Ask your parents if they think compassion is important to the way you are raised. Ask your teacher if they think it is important to the way they teach. Ask your classmates if they think it is important to the way they interact with friends. Discuss it with them if you think you need to.
Research the evolution of compassion and if it is shown more or less today than it used to be.
