As you likely know, the term "essay" arose some time ago from the French verb essayer, "to try." Respected thinkers like Michel de Montaigne and Samuel Johnson offered out carefully crafted writing in article form. Interested men and women read their work and talked about it, animatedly -- over tea, I imagine.
It's hard to believe personal writing about meaningful topics was a novel idea at one time. Think of the blogs, the Twitterfeeds, these guys would have managed!
In this section of Mrs. Burton's Speak Up, you'll find my short essays about learning, self-education, personal leadership, the beauty and importance of language, mentoring, and more. Since they are tries, I may well miss the boat in your eyes. (Or I may sink the bridge between my mind and yours, as per the intriguing photo above by Josie Elderslie, Creative Commons license.) My first "attempt" published here is The Unicorn of Best. I hope you'll take a minute and see what you think.
The invitation to "try back" is open and genuine. Family-appropriate is the filter.
Thanks in advance for thinking alongside me.
