WHS J Grading

WTV/WIRED/Sports Journalism GRADING

  • Students will be graded at various times about the First Amendment and journalism ethics. These can be essays, quizzes, etc., and are announced on Webex. Students will have a set amount of time to do these. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED.

  • Grading cycle is every week (for WTV it is every three weeks). Students MUST have an error-free article published on Westside Wired to earn full credit.

  • Student deadlines are set by student editors.

  • Points can be taken off for:

    • Misspelled words/names

    • Poor grammar

    • AP/WHS Style errors

    • Having less than two sources

  • NOTE: No credit will be given to students who did not follow editors directions/edits or who did not do a story assigned to them by an editor.

LANCE/SHIELD/Apollo GRADING

  • Students will be graded on a deadline based on publication dates

  • Deadlines in Shield and Lance are extremely important. Our yearbook can incur financial debt if deadlines are not met. If we miss Lance deadlines, our advertising will have to be refunded. DEADLINES ARE IMPORTANT.

  • Students will be graded at various times about the First Amendment and journalism ethics. These can be essays, quizzes, etc., and are announced on Webex. Students will have a set amount of time to do these. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED.

  • Students will be given tasks at the beginning of a deadline which can include taking photographs, covering events and much more.

  • Student deadlines are set by student editors.

  • Points can be taken off for:

    • Misspelled words/names

    • Poor grammar

    • AP/WHS Style errors

    • Poor/incomplete stories and cutlines

    • Poor/inconsistent design

    • NOTE: No credit will be given to students who did not follow editors directions/edits or who did not do a story assigned to them by an editor.

Photojournalism GRADING

  • Students will be graded on a deadline

  • Students will be graded at various times about the First Amendment and journalism ethics. These can be essays, quizzes, etc., and are announced on Webex. Students will have a set amount of time to do these. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED.

  • Students are expected to shoot one photo gallery per week.

  • They will be GRADED on having at least one gallery on Westside Wired, WITH CUTLINES, every two weeks.

  • Students will be given tasks at the beginning of a deadline which can include taking photographs, covering events and much more.

  • Student deadlines are set by student editors.

  • CUTLINES are part of the deadline

  • Points can be taken off for:

    • Consistently blurry/light/dark/boring photographs.

    • Not taking photographs of your assigned events

    • Misspelled words/names and poor grammar in cutlines

    • NOTE: No credit will be given to students who did not follow editors directions/edits or who did not do a story assigned to them by an editor.

Students who repeatedly miss deadlines/do not cover events/do not do what is asked will be put on probation, as detailed HERE. This could possibly lead to removal from staff.
