Test and Quiz Policies

When reviewing student work on an assessment for the first time, the teacher will only highlight mistakes made by the student. When students receive the assessment back, all they will see are the highlighted mistakes. No teacher comments will be made, no correct answers will be written in, and no grade will be on the assessment. Students will need to correct all their mistakes on the assessment.

When doing corrections, no changes should be made to the original assessment. Students should re-do each question with a highlighted mistake. This work should be completed on a separate piece of lined paper. If students can't figure out their mistakes on their own, they can receive help from teachers, classmates, parents, or other people. The corrections are due three school days after the student receives the assessment back in class. Students should turn in the original assessment and their corrections.

While grading the corrections, the teacher will also grade the original assessment. Students will receive back their original assessment with teacher comments, points taken off for each mistake made and a final score on the assessment.


Test and Quiz Re-Take Procedures

Some students may have not reached mastery of the material by the time of the assessment and will want to spend more time working on the material and then try another form of the assessment again.

Students can try the assessment again if they score below an 80%. Based on the score on the retake, students can increase the score that will be used towards calculating their grade:

Quizzes and Tests – Challenge Options

For each test and quiz, students have a choice of taking the standard assessment or a more challenging assessment. For those students that take the challenge assessment and have difficulty, they will have additional opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the material and thereby increase their score. The two options are:

  • Option 1: Using the table above as a guideline, students can complete their corrections and improve their score.
  • Option 2: After completing corrections of the questions they got wrong on the challenge assessment, students can take the standard assessment as a retake. I will use the score on the standard assessment when calculating end-of-quarter grades.

*Students interested in moving to honors in eighth grade should regularly take the challenge assessments.


Class Expectations

Students are expected to arrive to class on time with appropriate supplies. In class, students are expected to work hard, be inclusive and supportive of their classmates, and use their time well. Time will be spent in class in the Fall defining these expectations in more detail. As mentioned above, students accumulate points over the course of a quarter. Students can lose points according to the following:
