Welcome to senior photography 2021

Kia ora koutou and welcome to the WHS senior photography learning site. This site functions both as a learning site for all of our senior photography students at WHS and as a place to share our work with the world. On this page you will find key information that will orientate you to the course. You should read all of the information below carefully. It will also be explained to you in the first class of the year. All of the year’s tasks and assignments will be available from the pull down menus above.

What you need to complete NCEA photography

In order to complete NCEA photography you will need A DSLR camera (a mirrorless camera is also fine). Entry models such as the Canon 3000D runs about $540 at Noel Leeming (you will also need to factor in money to buy an SD card, and a small camera bag). Purchasing second hand is also an option, or, you may have a family member you can borrow a camera from (you will need consistent access to it throughout the year). You can discuss camera choices with your teacher (though ideally you should have one from the start of the course as it is a course requirement that is listed in the curriculum handbook).

A Note on Digital File Storage and Management

It is important that you consider how you store and back up your files right from the start of this course. Having all the images on your SD card is not a storage solution! All files should be offloaded from your SD/CF card immediately after a shoot onto your laptop/computer. This prevents images being lost in the case of SD or CF card failure or you accidentally deleting things to make more space. You must also have a cloud or other backup solution that backs up the files from your laptop/computer—the easiest way to do this is to use the Google Drive app on your computer. (You will most likely need to store your files ‘locally’ initially rather than having them only on the cloud as you will probably need to complete basic editing tasks etc which will require the files to be on your computer).
