Ko te kupu nei te “Kapa Haka” he tirohanga whānui ki ngā mahi toi Māori, ārā ngā mahi haka, waiata ā ringa, te tū pakari, te kori tinana, te pūkana, te whakakotahitanga o te katoa. The term ‘kapa haka’ refers to a broad range of Māori performing arts combining stance, posture, movement and expression to form a single whole.
Kaha Haka (Waiata tira, waiata a ringa, poi, haka), is an integral part of what we teach within Westland High School. It is the body/tinana of many things surrounding Māor culture.
Kotahitanga/Unity is what we invite within this environment. This gives the group and oneself, identity and develops a sense of belonging, thinking and understanding.
The experience in Kapa Haka, provides an important part of one’s own individuality, there is also the interlacing of other forms of expressions.
The experiences in Kapa Haka are things that can be handed down to their fellow peers, with the support of senior students helping with this. This allows the senior students with a key role in showing what they as young leaders can achieve by way of doing. They become the mentors to our juniors and show the pathway that they to can follow and aspire to.
Completion of this course will no doubt enrich each student to a meaningful outlook to future goals and career options.
This course for senior students will develop performance skills through participation and demonstration. As students develop extended knowledge, their growth and development will be enhanced.
