Born and raised in Sacramento, the stolen ancestral lands of the Nisenan, Miwok, and Southern Maidu peoples, I returned to my hometown in 2022 to begin my journey at Westlake Charter High. These past two years, I've taught 10th Grade World History, Honors World History, World Dance, and Music Studies.
This year (2024-2025) I will once again teach 10th Grade World History, Honors World History, as well as Music Studies in the Spring of 2025.
I seek to help students develop into empathetic, open-minded Global Citizens by protecting and advocating for the presence and knowledges of ALL cultures, languages, gender expressions, racial and ethnic communities, religions, and abilities in the classroom. As an educator, I believe it is my job to get to know each and every one of my learners, ensuring that all students and families feel welcomed and empowered when entering our classroom space and campus.
Highlights of my Teaching Career and Educational Journey
~FROM MOST RECENT TO LEAST RECENT~
In 2023, I was awarded a Teacher Research Fellowship through the National Endowment of the Humanities to engage in place-based research on the accuracy, integration, and impacts of Indigenous History in U.S. Social Science curriculum, facilitated by the Upstander Academy in Boston, MA. This transformative opportunity helped shape the anti-colonial framework that guides my curriculum, teaching methods, and engagement in the school's Leadership committee.
In 2022, I earned my Masters in Teaching Secondary History and Social Sciences and English Learner Authorization as a member of UC Berkeley's Educators for Equity and Excellence (BE3) Masters Program.
My Master's Thesis research explored the impacts of incorporating storytelling into history classes for multilingual, newly-immigrated learners. To view my thesis film, email me and I'll send you a link.
During this program, I served as a Student Teacher for 12th Grade Government for English Learners at Tennyson High School in Hayward, CA and 11th Grade US History for English Learners at Richmond High School in Richmond, CA.
Before returning to California in 2021, I lived for 2 years outside of Atlanta, Georgia, initially working as a singer, dancer, and theater arts educator with professional theater companies and schools around the region. It was right before COVID when I realized my desire to transition from performing as a career, to instead utilizing performing arts as effective tools for developing students' critical thinking skills.
From 2015-2019, I attended Denison University (a liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio) graduating in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and 2 Minors in Education Studies and Vocal Performance. During the summer of 2016, I lived and worked in Sri Lanka, conducting research on the inclusion of performing arts in K-12 education and teaching dance at schools and studios across the country.
