Westfield STEAM Camp - Intermediate Long Programs

Long Programs are selected during registration. These are the programs campers visit every day for 45 minutes each. Long Programs are assigned on a ranked first-come, first-served basis. Certain Long Programs may not run if there is not enough interest.

Gamer Edition

Tired of using a boring plastic controller? In this course, you'll use use Makey Makey kits to explore the world of inventive hardware design to create one-of-a-kind game controllers. You’ll learn how to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds, mapping circuits to your favorite games and designing custom interfaces that are limited only by your imagination.

LEGO Spike Prime

Ready to bring your imagination to life? Using the LEGO Spike Prime system, campers will master the art of blending colorful bricks with smart sensors and powerful motors. From building autonomous explorers to coding clever robots that can solve real-world challenges, you’ll learn how to turn a pile of parts into a high-tech machine with just a few lines of code.

Build and Launch

Ready to reach new heights? Campers will start by exploring aerodynamics with custom-built bottle rockets, using pressurized water to learn the secrets of stability and lift. Then, we’re leveling up to the big leagues: building and launching solid-fuel engine rockets. You’ll design your craft, calculate your trajectory, and experience the thrill of a real countdown as your creation pierces the sky.

LEGO Stop-Motion

Animation

Ever wonder how your favorite brick-built characters come to life on screen? In this course, you’ll be the director, cinematographer, and lead animator in your very own film studio! Using LEGO bricks and professional-grade stop motion software, campers will master the art of frame-by-frame storytelling. You’ll build intricate sets, learn the principles of fluid movement, and add sound effects to transform a series of still photos into a cinematic masterpiece.

Crime Scene Clues

Step behind the yellow tape and into the shoes of a lead forensic investigator. In this course, you'll use sophisticated science used to crack the toughest cases! As an detective, you’ll master the technical methods of evidence recovery from lifting latent fingerprints with professional powders to analyzing the unique geometry of footprint impressions. You'll even get to take home your very own impression of your shoe!

Eco-Engineering:

Green Solutions

In this course, you will step into the role of environmental engineers to tackle the world’s biggest sustainability challenges! Through hands-on prototyping, you’ll explore the mechanics of renewable energy and green infrastructure. By the end of the week, you’ll learn how to create high-tech, Earth-friendly solutions for a cleaner future.

E-Fashion:

Wearable Technology

This hands-on STEAM course introduces elementary students to the exciting world of wearable technology! Students will explore basic concepts of electricity and circuits as they design and create their own light-up wearable items using battery packs and LED lights. By combining engineering, fashion design, and problem-solving, students will bring their bright ideas to life in a fun and engaging project.

Can your car survive a high-speed jump or climb the steepest hill in camp? In this course, you'll be putting your engineering skills to the ultimate test as you design, build, and race custom K'nex vehicles! Campers will have to balance speed, weight, and durability to conquer daily obstacles. You’ll learn exactly what it takes to turn a pile of rods and connectors into a high-performance machine.
