9/28/26 Our first grade scientists are learning about air. We acted like engineers to create something to solve a problem. We built parachutes using simple materials: napkins, string, a paper clip, and tape! Then we went outside to see them float to the ground, not drop, because of air resistance!
9/27/26 1A mathematicians are learning to navigate their way around a number grid by playing Rolling for 50.
9/25/26 Mrs. Shapiro came in to help us understand Hispanic Heritage Month. She read a book called If Domincan Were A Color. She showed us pictures of places in the Domincan Republic and places in New Jersey. 1A students had to use clues to figure out the setting of each picture. Some pictures were tricky!
9/24/26 1A mathematicians had their first Explorations lesson. They were able to freely explore math manipulatives they will use throughout the school year: base-10 blocks, pattern blocks, geoboards, and connecting cubes!
9/23/26 We are learning how to make tally marks, create tally charts, and draw conclusions from data displayed on tally charts. Here we filled in a tally chart about our favorite season.
9/18/26 On the International Day of Peace we listened to stories, looked at symbols of peace, and shared what peace feels like, looks like, and sounds like. Then we went outside with sidewalk chalk and drew pictures of peaceful symbols - peace signs, hearts, and smiling faces.
First graders play Top It to identify and compare numbers!
9/17/26 1A scientists are learning about air! Our first investigation: use a variety of objects and try to find out as much information about air as possible. Our big conclusion - air can move things! Our scientists are looking forward to finding out more about air.
9/16/26 1A authors and illustrators wrote pattern books called When I Was Five. Then they shared the books with their classmates.
9/16/26 1A mathematicians play Bunny Hop to learn how to hop on a number line!
9/15/26 We used whiteboards to practice number writing!
9/11/26 First graders learned the value of a penny. They learned a new game called Penny Dice. They are counting pennies and learning the importance of saying cents after the count.
9/9/26 First grade mathematicians are learning how to use a number line. They played Number Line Squeeze as a whole class, and then played in small groups.
9/8/26 First graders are learning how to for lower case letters properly.
9/8/26 1A mathematicians estimate and then count a large number of objects.
