First graders use magnetic letter tiles to practice building words with suffix -s!
12/10/25 1A mathematicians are learning to measure! We are measuring with a variety of objects: connecting cubes, craft sticks, base-10 cubes, and paper clips. Here we are measuring classroom objects with 1 unsharpened pencil. This takes coordination and concentration!
12/5/25 During social studies we discussed the importance of school rules. The children worked in small groups to discuss what they thought would be good rules to have in school.
12/4/25 1A mathematicians play a game to reinforce the skill of navigating their way around the number grid!
11/21/25 During Morning Meeting, we greet each other, share something, engage in a group activity, and read a morning message. Today we learned a new group activity: Mirror, Mirror. Working with a partner, we took turns mirroring each other's movements. We really had to focus to be successful!
11/18/25 We got together with our 4th grade buddies in Ms. Lavin's class to listen to a Thanksgiving story. Then, we all decorated a turkey feather with things and people for which we a thankful.
11/14/25 In Social Studies 1A students are discovering that they can learn from each other. The students walked around and interviewed each other to find out what they are each good at, what they like, and what they would like to learn.
11/11/25 1A mathematicians play Domino Top-It to reinforce understanding of parts-and-total diagrams.

10/14/2025 1A got together with 4th grade buddies from Ms. Lavin's class. We had a great time getting to know each other, listening to The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, and then making construction paper pumpkins inspired by the story. Check out our unique pumpkin patch!
10/3/25 First grade scientists planted ryegrass seeds and alfalfa seeds. Both grew tall. Today we had to mow our lawns. We made predictions and everyone thinks the ryegrass and alfalfa will continue to grow.
9/30/25 Mrs. MacDougall joined us today for a lesson on respecting personal space.
9/30/25 First grade mathematicians are learning to navigate their way around a number grid by playing Rolling for 50!
9/30/25 1A students are drill leaders! Practicing our letter-keyword-sounds helps to reinforce our understanding that letters make sounds that make words when put together.
9/29/25 First grade scientists/gardeners planted lawns! We planted ryegrass and alfalfa seeds. The scientists are observing, monitoring, and recording their growth.
9/19/25 We celebrated the International Day of Peace! We read and signed a Peace Pledge and talked about what peace means to each of us. Then, we went outside and decorated the blacktop with symbols of peace.
9/17/25 First graders were given pictures of a variety of animals. Their task was to sort them into categories . . . and the students had to come up with the categories!

9/15/25 We're learning to count up on a number line by playing Bunny Hop.
9/12/25 First grade mathematicians learned that pennies look different than other coins because of their color and their value is 1 cent. We practiced counting pennies and comparing numbers with a game called Penny-Dice.
9/9/25 First graders are learning how to work with a number line and compare numbers with a fun game called Number Line Squeeze.
9/9/25 First graders are learning to form lower case letters properly.
9/8/25 First grade mathematicians are working together to estimate and count a large group of objects with accuracy.
9/8/25 Reader's Workshop has begun! First graders are learning how to care for books, read with stamina, and share what they've read.
9/4/25 The first day of school and we're already writing! We read First Day Jitters and then wrote how we felt this morning!
