Course Information:
Welcome to Global Perspectives!
This course will help students develop the advanced skills, understandings, and perspectives necessary to be successful citizens in a world community. We will begin the course by studying various cultures to develop a better understanding of the diverse experiences of people around the world. The course then focuses on the major forces that have shaped recent history–exploration, trade, colonialism, imperialism, revolution, nationalism, self-determination, militarism, and globalization–and requires students to consider how the international community can best respond to contemporary challenges that have grown out of these forces. Additional topics aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content standards as well as the disciplines of geography, economics, and civics will be integrated to provide a comprehensive social studies experience.
Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills related to the Common Core State Standards will be reinforced throughout all course units. We will also review organization, note-taking, test-taking, and study strategies which promote self-regulated learning. Finally, students will learn skills related to inquiry based learning and taking informed action. Essential questions that are important, relevant, and related to complex ideas and problems in society will be used to drive research and analysis. Students will present their analysis and have opportunities in taking informed action to address various challenges facing our world today.
