October
1M had an amazing week with the runathon, fire safety assembly and extra activities for our week of respect..
Reading/Writing: We focused on comprehension while reading. The children practiced making connections as they read and shared the connections that they made. We read a story called Sophie’s Squash and I introduced a new story element each day. The five elements we explored were the characters, setting, problem, events, and solution. The best way to practice this at home is to have your child retell these parts of the story to you. I sent home a retelling hand on yellow paper in their take home folders. We will continue working on these key story elements next week and throughout the school year.
In writing, we began writing sentences with repeating patterns. The children are enjoying writing time and they are feeling successful. I am impressed with their effort and creativity.
Fundations: We finished all of our letters and sounds in Unit 1. The children will have their first Unit Assessment on Tuesday.
Math: This week we began Unit 2 and focused on addition strategies. We practiced using a ten frame with counters. The students also enjoyed playing Ten Frame Top-It and 2 Fisted Penny Addition. Our 5th grade buddies assisted us with logging on to our computers. The children were thrilled to be able to use their Chromebooks to play a math game with them and decorate a Halloween spider.
Science: We continued our Air and Weather Unit by exploring how a parachute uses air resistance. The weather conditions were just right for our young scientists to launch their parachutes outside.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend,
Mrs. Morris
