A balanced literacy approach is the theoretical framework which drives the teaching and learning of language arts in the Westfield Public Schools. The language arts curriculum seeks to empower students as life-long learners with an appreciation of and respect for the rich diversity of human voices and experiences. The curriculum establishes a “staircase” of increasing complexity in what students must be able to read so that all students are ready for the demands of college- and career-level reading and writing.
