This college-level literature course concentrates on a variety of authentic Latin texts, with particular attention to Vergil's Aeneid and Pliny the Younger's Epistles. The nature of advanced literature including epic poems, letters, and histories is a central focus of this course. Students critically discuss and analyze the required selections of the ancient texts as required by the Advanced Placement reading list. Students focus on sight-reading, translation, grammar, scansion and poetic devices. Portions of these and other works may also be read in translation to enhance understanding of the nature of the style of writing and Roman culture. This is primarily a literature course with additional readings on mythology and ancient history. This course is recommended for most students who have successfully completed Latin III or Latin III Honors and are interested in a fast-paced and challenging course to develop the ability to read and analyze Latin literature as required by the Advanced Placement Latin reading list. At the end of this course students will be equipped to take the Advanced Placement Exam in May 2026.
