Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to 6th grade Social Studies! I believe what happens in this classroom will affect your child’s future. Your child’s time here will be well spent. Together, we will work together to build a supportive, creative, and interactive classroom. I am here to make history interesting, fun, and memorable. Thank you for your continued support throughout this year.
I began my teaching career at Edison Intermediate School in the spring of 2003 as a student teacher. For 12 years, I taught 8th grade United States history followed by three years of teaching 7th grade World history. I love retelling the story of our world’s past and I am extremely excited to be able to share my love and passion of history for the first time to in my career to with your 6th graders. In addition to teaching your children about the Ancient World, I also teach 7th graders about Medieval and Renaissance Europe.
Our 6th grade Social Studies course is called “The Ancient World.” We will begin this school year with the origins of human societies and civilizations. Through the studies of history, geography, archaeology, economics, and civics, we will explore major topics that include: the Fertile Crescent, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. Our school year will conclude with the decline of the Roman Empire. We will focus on how our perspective about our own life experiences can be viewed as part of the larger human story across time. In connection and continuation with the 7th grade curriculum, we will also explore the characteristics of flourishing cultures and the reasons for the success or failure of human societies.
