Grading methods

I use points to calculate individual assignment grades. However, on average, quizzes and tests account for 55% of the marking period grade, lab reports and activities account for 20%, homework and classwork for 15%, and projects and presentations for the remaining 10%. Assignments will NOT be graded if there is no name(s) on it.

I use a variety of grading styles in my grade book. Assignments that are more in depth like tests or projects that have a rubric are generally graded with individual points. Assignments like shorter labs with answers that are provided to students will generally be graded using a "Checks" system: √++ = 100% credit, √+ = 90%, √ = 80%, √- = 70%, and √-- = 60%. Many classwork and homework assignments are graded on a pass/fail basis (had it or didn't have it): pass = 100% credit, fail = 0% credit. Sometimes I will use the O-S-U system: an O for "outstanding" (100%), S for "satisfactory" (85%), or U for "unsatisfactory" (70%). Missing assignments are worth 0% and a lot of missing assignments can greatly impact the marking period grade.

Students who make the effort to participate and learn will be very successful in the course.
