The goal of the Westfield Intermediate Visual Arts Curriculum is to develop an awareness
and appreciation of the visual arts in every learner for grades 6, 7, and 8. Eighth-grade
Crafts is an elective half-year course designed to provide students with the continuation of
artistic skills developed in sixth and seventh grade. The course is structured to improve
and enhance student creative abilities and critical thinking skills. Students are stimulated
to grow creatively, intellectually and emotionally by providing them opportunities to
discover, create and refine their individual artwork. Through the exposure of art, history
and various cultures, and by exploring a wide variety of artistic materials and techniques
students develop an appreciation of individual differences and recognize the artistic
expression of others. The Visual Arts Program provides students with opportunities to
express their personal impressions artistically, verbally and in writing. This includes
critical analysis, as well as aesthetics and evaluation.
Students in eighth grade experience the processes of drawing, painting, sculpture, collage,
ceramics, graphic design, elements of critique and develop the technical skills applicable
to advancing in crafts.
This elective course is designed to introduce 8th grade students to the creation of crafts
from the ancient and modern world to better understand form and function in art. Students
study technical skills in the creation of traditional and modern crafts including but not
limited to clay, fiber, textiles, wood, plaster and paper mache. Students build a working
knowledge and understanding of world art and its impact on modern society, as well as its
historical and cultural relevance. Students understand that art is an integral part of
everyday life from clothing to household objects and can be both functional and
decorative. The Art curriculum is sequential with respect to the increased depth of content
from the 8th grade program to the high school program.
In addition to developing the necessary skills associated with art making, a study of
humanities exposes students to the diverse and rich cultures of our world, giving them a
better understanding of how different types of art have evolved. Students gain an
understanding that art is an integral part of their total environment and life experience, as
well as develop an awareness, respect and appreciation for the art of other cultures and
eras
