Welcome to 6th grade Mathematics!
The Math 6 curriculum links to and builds on students’ elementary mathematics experiences, provides for the acquisition and mastery of essential skills, and introduces new concepts or revisits familiar ones in greater depth. There is a strong emphasis on understanding of and computing with rational numbers, rates and ratios, basic algebraic expressions and equations, statistical thinking, area and volume. It is important for all students to have access to a rich curriculum that enables them to acquire a solid knowledge of mathematics, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to reason effectively, so that they will be well prepared for seventh grade math and beyond. In order to develop the foundation needed for the formal study of algebra and geometry, the sixth grade curriculum challenges students to think about mathematics, work collaboratively, and solve meaningful problems.
To My New Students:
I am excited to meet you and begin your journey through middle school together. Throughout the course of the school year, we will be learning concepts that are aligned with the NJ Student Learning Standards for Mathematics. This web site contains information and documents related to our class. Please refer to our Google Homework Calendar and Google Classroom on a regular basis for assignments, documents, and upcoming assessments. If, at any time during the school year, you feel you need extra help and support, please come and work with me. I am here to help you find success this year. And, as the summer winds down, know that you will learn and grow so much this year. I look forward to our time together!
Mrs. Heisler
Supplies we will use in math this year:
A section in your morning or afternoon binder labeled "MATH". Consider using folders to separate subjects in your binder and dividers for breaking up papers within a subject. For math, it would be helpful to have dividers for NOTES, PRACTICE, and ASSESSMENTS.
Loose leaf paper
Pencils with erasers
(2 or 3) 1-subject notebooks (used one at a time throughout the year)
Red pen
Highlighter
Ear buds or headphones
CHARGED Chromebook
Basic four-function calculator (optional; used in May/June only)
Handheld pencil sharpener and 3 hole punch (optional but highly recommended)
I also humbly request classroom donations of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and tissues (lots and lots of tissues)
Throughout the year, you will need access to the internet and a printer. If you do not have these at home, you can use our school library or come speak to me about alternate methods of accessing class assignments.
