The work of the English Learning department centers on our vision and mission statements, and adheres to the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) standards. Our vision is to be the benchmark of educational excellence in English as a Second Language best practices. Our mission is to empower English learners with the tools they need to be successful in all academic content courses, while simultaneously developing their proficiency in English.
English Learning (EL) courses qualify for elective credit, not English Language Arts credit.

In ESOL Emergent A, for newcomers in the country less than one year; emphasis is on learners becoming proficient in the four domains of English language; reading, writing, speaking and listening at the emergent and beginning level. Learning goals align with the Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards. Materials, resources, and the pace of this course are adapted to meet the individual needs of emergent English Learners. Students are introduced to high-frequency vocabulary and grammatical structures and gradually build a foundation in understanding and communicating in English. Students learn strategies to facilitate and enhance their language acquisition and help them become independent learners to access grade-level academic content.

In ESOL Senior Strategies for Success, emphasis is on learners becoming proficient in the four domains of English language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Using content and standards identified by the State of Ohio, students learn professional skills necessary for success in 21st century workplaces and careers. Learning goals align with the Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards and current graduation requirements. Materials, resources, and the pace of this course are adapted to meet the individual needs of English Learners. Students are introduced to high-frequency vocabulary and grammatical structures and gradually build a foundation in understanding and communicating in English. Students begin to create with the language, communicate with other students, and learn to talk and write about their personal interests and activities. By reading simple texts, interacting, and discussing familiar topics, students develop comprehension of authentic American English language as well as academic vocabulary acquisition. Students learn strategies to facilitate and enhance their language acquisition and help them become independent learners to access the 21st century skills necessary for success.
