Program description:
The fellowship with a primary specialty in drug development provides an innovative, mentored experience combining academic clinical investigation and pharmaceutical industry training for PharmDs in early postdoctoral years. The objective of the program is to provide training in proper conduct of clinical trials, safety surveillance, and risk management, methodologies, & exposure to scientific and ethical issues in research and development. Fellows will participate in clinical research, patient care, and interdisciplinary didactics. In partnership with Genentech, a leading biotechnology company in serious or life-threatening medical conditions, fellows will gain experience in clinical development and build core competencies in clinical & safety sciences in order to prepare them for exciting careers in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry.
Activities/Responsibilities of the Fellow
Industry fellow work: fellows will spend approximately 60% of their time rotating through and working on collaborative projects in Safety Sciences and Clinical Sciences with team members at Genentech. Fellows at Actelion will work closely with the medical information team.
Training/skill building: the fellow will complete coursework (hosted at UCSF) that will build skills in research and writing. Courses may include designing clinical research, clinical seminars and journal clubs, and bi-weekly clinical pharmacology seminars.
UCSF Clinical Pharmacy Rotation: The fellow will spend approximately 10-20% time in a clinical experience (typically ambulatory). The specific clinic experience is negotiated when a fellow comes on board and depends on experience of the fellow and availability of preceptors. We believe that this connection between clinical experience and the pharmaceutical industry experience is a unique feature of our program that is not emphasized or available in many other industry partnered fellowships.
Teaching: The fellow is expected to participate in training UCSF students. This may include giving formal lecture presentations, participating in objective structured clinical examinations as an examiner, and/or serving as a discussion section leader.
