CLUE is a touchstone of American culture. Everyone has either played the game or has seen it on the shelf of a toy store or a friend's closet. Even if you haven't, the phrase, "so and so did it in the library with the lead pipe," rings a bell. Few, however, know it's history.
The game was created by Anthony E. Pratt, who developed it while hold up in bunkers during the air raids on Birmingham in World War II. The game's original name is Cluedo, a portmanteau of the the word "clue" and the Latin word for "I play" -- "ludo." Released in America in 1949 by Parker Brothers, it was an instant success.
In 1985, the game was adapted for the screen by John Landis. The film included an ensemble of stars including Time Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, and Colleen Camp. While it has since become a cult classic, the film was considered a flop at the box office, failing to recoup its $15 million budget.
In 1997, Clue was re-written for the stage as a musical, which achieved moderate success. Finally, Sandy Rustin, re-worked the script from the 1985 movie and included elements from the 1997 musical to create CLUE: On Stage, which has gone on to universal acclaim.
