West End Te Kura ō Mōrere moved to it's current site in 1913. The area the field is on was a swamp at the time. In the 1970s's a flood diversion scheme was put in the Mangaotuku stream at Devon Intermediate. Before then the field used to flood on a regular basis in heavy rains. Still when it rains heavily today the field becomes sodden quite quickly and parts take a while to drain.
With all this in mind it was decided to try and establish a wetland area. The space between the old swimming pool and the Mangaotuku Stream was chosen and planting began on December 6th 2019.
This site is a chance for others to follow our progress.
This is what the area looked like before we began. It gets very muddy in winter and isn't used a lot. We aim to add more wetland plants over time.
AIMS: We want a wetland area for several reasons.
1. We want to restore some of the land to what it once was.
2. We want to create an environment where the children can observe and learn about the plants and animals found in a wetland.
3. We want to increase the bio-diversity of the plants at school.
4. We want to encourage more bird life to school. both greater numbers and more species.
5. We want to encourage other animals to be part of our school environment.
August 2021: The Wetland area is now planted out and we have two lakes established. Here is a video that shows how we got to where we are today.
