Overview of the Movement
The term “fourth-wave feminism” refers to the feminist movement of the present day. Some argue that this is a continuation of the third wave, but others suggest the fourth-wave came as a result of the impact of social media on social and political activism. The present wave remains concerned with all of the issues previous waves took up, but modern day feminists criticize previous waves as being concerned primarily with the rights of white women. Current activists are more aware of intersectionality and are fighting for equality of all women, including women of color and trans women. Fourth-wave activists are challenging power dynamics in society, beauty standards, and rape culture. More women have run for political office in recent years than ever before, and many activists are using social media platforms to campaign and to garner support for causes affecting women.
