About this Task:
One of the most important parts of science is communicating with other scientists. There is a special kind of writing, "technical writing," that is used for scientific communication. They are represented in the Science Continuum, under SCI 4. This task will give you the opportunity to not only demonstrate your technical writing skills but also allow you to write an essay and earn ratings in ELA 2, 3, and 4.
Skill Ratings?
SCI 1.1: I can ask a Scientific Question.
SCI 4.1: I can construct Evidence-Based Explanations.
SCI 4.2: I can identify and use appropriate Text Structure for the purpose.
SCI 4.3: I can follow Writing Conventions.
Optional: ELA 2, 3, and 4s!
Pick a topic to write about. Ask a scientific question, then write an essay.
Make a copy of the "research collector." As you review resources below, find an interesting topic, and start gathering research.
If you write an informative or argumentative essay, using the ELA essay templates, you can earn ratings for ELA 2's and SCI 4's.
If you do not care to earn the ELA ratings, you can just focus on a short technical writing piece to earn ratings for SCI 4's.
If you need some ideas to write about, review the resources at the bottom of this page and explore a little about the field of genetics.
(Optional) To earn ELA 4's:
Submit your writing to slate.
Fill out the final portion of your feedback log and have your final conference with your instructor.
First, review the SCI 4 continuum, and understand what is needed to earn credit in SCI 4s. In short, you will need to use appropriate scientific vocabulary to ask a scientific question, use data and/or research to answer that question, and demonstrate understanding of a scientific concept. You will need to use an appropriate format and cite your sources.
The cool part is that this work almost gets you to an argumentative or informative essay. So, with just a touch more work, you can complete ELA 2's. You should do that, unless you don't need ELA 2's. But who doesn't need ELA 2s?
Use the resources at the bottom of the page if you need some ideas, or talk to your instructor if you need more direction!
