Assignment 003
SKUM...what are we talking about, SKUM of the earth, NOPE!
SKUM is an acronym for Subject, Key details, Understanding the connections, and Meaning
To show you how to use this reading technique we will do the following steps
1. Go to YouTube and type in Funny Commercial:beauty is nothing without brains. Just watch the commercial. You are not critically viewing the commercial, just watching it.
2. Watch the commercial again and this time do a Subject level analysis of the commercial. Record the who, what, when and where of the commercial at the most simplistic level. Example: who: two ladies
3. Watch the commercial again and this time record all the Key details that are important to the communication of the subject: Example: young woman, blonde, stamping books, wears glasses
4. Now record your connection between your Subject level analysis and Key details. This is you being able to show that you Understand the Connections between the your subject level analysis and the key details.
Example: Book shelves, people studying, quiet = Library
5. Now you are ready to address Meaning. Meaning pushes you to look at your critical reading of a text in order to make a supported claim, rather than simply offering your opinion of the text. (This is the difference between watching and reading—awareness—moving you from surface level reading into a critical reading of text). Record what you think the meaning of this commercial is.
