SCI 3 Develop and Use Models
3.1 Create a model to represent a system
3.2 Use the model to communicate ideas
3.3 Evaluate and Refine Models
The goal of this lesson is to help you select a system to model and help you get familiar enough with it that you can build a quality model to demonstrate your Sci 3 Competencies.
Step 1: Gather your notes from lesson 2. Review some of the basic information included in that section.
Step 2: Use the Research Guide: Pendulums and Model Ideas: Pendulums documents to help you explore systems that you can focus on for your model.
Step 3: After you have done some basic googling, in Slate, Write a comment about what your focus will be for your model.
Step 4: Submit your comment in Slate
After you have done some basic googling, determine what system you will focus on for your model. Submit it as a comment in Slate.
Step 1: Make a copy of the Systems Diagram Worksheet for Pendulums, below.
Step 2: Watch the presentation in the resource section below.
Step 3: Complete "Part 2" on YOUR copy of the Systems Diagram Worksheet while watching the video and reviewing resources.
Step 4: Complete "Part 3" on the worksheet.
Step 5: Attach your copy of the worksheet and Submit Lesson 9 to Slate.
Complete Part 1 on your copy of the Exploration Worksheet as you watch the video linked below. Then work through part 2, thinking about your system
Do NOT continue to Lesson 10 if you have questions about system diagrams. Go get them answered first!
Step 1: Make a copy of the Make a Systems Diagram, linked below.
Step 2: Follow the directions on the worksheet to build a systems diagram. If you get stuck, talk to your science teacher.
Step 3: Use the worksheet to help you write your hypothesis, this should be your prediction. Include a revised version of your prediction on your system diagram.
Step 3: Submit Lesson 4 in slate and bring your system diagram to your teacher for review or rating.
Step 1: Make a copy of Planning and Developing a Model.
Step 2: Complete Part 1 of the template, using your research from the last lesson.
Step 3: Schedule a discussion with your science teacher to discuss Part 2 of the template.
Step 4: Submit to Slate
Please note: this is an ELA assignment, and completing it is optional, but the research will help you with your model!
Step 1: Make a copy of and complete the ELA Research Template. Use the research question you created from the last lesson.
Step 3: Go have a discussion with BOTH an ELA teacher and a science teacher about the research you have collected.
Step 4: Submit the ELA Research Template to Slate
Step 1: Open your copy of Planning and Developing a Model Template.
Step 2: Complete Part 3.
Step 3: Submit to Slate.
Stop! This lesson must be marked complete before you move on.
Step 1: Complete Part 4 of the template.
Step 2: Start creating your model based on what you have written in Part 3
Step 3: Submit to Slate
Stop! This lesson must be marked complete before you move on.
Step 1: Open your copy of Planning and Developing a Model
Step 2: Complete Part 5 of the template.
Step 3: Submit to Slate
Stop! This lesson must be marked complete before you move on.
Step 1: If your model scored at a 10 and you would like to try and earn a 12, complete Part 6 on the template.
Step 2: Submit to Slate
Step 3: Revise as necessary
