locard principle

MILESTONE 3, STEPPING STONE 1

About this Stepping stone:

In this stepping stone, we will explore the Locard Principle, a basic principle in forensics. This theory relates to the transfer of trace evidence between objects, stating that “every contact leaves a trace”. The theory dictates that when two objects come into contact with one another, each will take something from the other object or leave something behind. Using the Locard principle you will draw conclusions and make valid and reliable scientific claims between relationships.

to do:

1. Download and make a copy of the data table for this lab.

2. Collect trace fibers, hair, and any other trace evidence you can find on your clothes and look at them under the microscopes.

3. Draw a picture of the evidence (fiber, hair, etc) that you see under the microscope and be sure to color it and label it.

4. Once you finish looking and drawing the trace evidence, fill out the data table linking the fiber/hair to where you might have picked it up

5. Answer the following questions:

  • How might the Locard Principle help in solving a crime?

  • What complications do you think could happen while collecting the evidence?

  • What was the hardest part of this lab for you?

6. Submit to Slate
