With a combination of blockly-style programming and external robotic pieces and mechanisms provided by the Hummingbird Robotics kits, 7th grade students will create simple robots and machines that respond to different commands and inputs of their choice. Students are faced with the challenge of using external lights and motors along with simple craft materials to create interactive machines that not only showcase robotics but also offer a learning experience based on one of their core curriculum subjects, such as History or Science. Their only limitations are those imposed by their own imaginations. Students are put into groups which allows them to understand how to collaborate in a team environment while diligently designing, programming, and managing their time in a productive manner. This is a chance for them to be creative and have fun in a classroom environment while learning valuable life skills. Problem solving skills are used in creating some really cool machines and working through the bugs and errors that can occur when programming and robotics are involved. Ultimately, students will display incredible amounts of creativity, drive, and focus while having a fun time.
