The Braided Project is an experiment in creating a radically inclusive theatrical space. Our goal is to bring together people from typically underrepresented groups in the theater to work with heightened texts. Our first project is an is an in-depth study into Othello through the lens of interracial relationships and what it means to live in a multicultural society. I have chosen to start with Othello because it blatantly and necessarily addresses race and racism. Through a series of workshops, master classes, and open rehearsals and production meetings, The Braided Project allows people to engage in the process, whether or not they are directly involved in the production.
Theater, like the rest of our world, is flawed. It is not as inclusive as it should be, and we do not always tell the stories we should tell. However, when we get it right, there is nothing like it. The Braided Project is all about trying to get it right. We will not be perfect, nor do we strive to be. We are simply trying to bring an important message to as many people as we can.
People interested in the arts deserve to find a way in. Sometimes we do not know we love something until we have an epiphany, some moment of clarity and understanding. I needed a push to find out theater was my way of giving to the world, and this project is my way of giving back. Let us be the push you need to get involved, be it in a lot or just once. Give us the chance to help you find understanding and maybe even have a little fun.
Well this part is all up to you! We You choose how you want to be a part of the creation.
Do you want to join our company? Do you want to watch us work? Do you want us to come to you? Do you just want to engage once and never see us again? Let us know, and we will figure something out.
And the beauty of it is, if your first choice does not work out, there are always more ways in. Find your doorway, and let us open it.
