Overview of LEAP at Lookout Mountain
Lookout Mountain’s Enriched Academic Program (LEAP) services students who have qualified in one or more of the three gifted areas—verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal. The program provides learning experiences beyond the regular curriculum. The services provided also increase the depth and complexity of information while providing appropriate acceleration and expansion. Students are continually encouraged to become global thinkers, innovative problem solvers, and expert communicators via engaging, integrated, and challenging curricular units of study. For those qualifying quantitatively, the pacing of the math curriculum is accelerated one year in advance while reinforcing the students’ grade level concepts. The afternoon enrichment program incorporates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) skills within units with overarching themes such as economics, architecture, inventions, cultures, animal studies, law, and changes over time. Literature studies are used to inspire a love of reading and expand vocabulary. Students are also encouraged to exhibit scholarly habits while researching and presenting both cooperative and independent projects. Most importantly, assistance is provided for students to recognize their strengths, needs, and individuality while achieving their potential and contributing to the overall school community.
