Caring for Lakeview's Chromebooks

PROPER HANDLING

Our Chromebooks can handle high usage; however, we still ask that families use respectful & responsible care in handling devices.

  • Lift the top from the center. DO NOT open from corners; doing so can cause the screen to pop out at the corner.

  • Carry with 2 hands and the lid closed

  • NO FOOD OR DRINKS near the device.

CLEANING (when dirty or as often as needed)

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth and a solution of half rubbing alcohol & half water (a tiny spray bottle works great)

  • NEVER spray on the device!! Spray the alcohol solution on the cloth, then gently wipe the outside and inside of the Chromebook.

  • Air dry, then close.

Chromebook Tips and Tricks

I CAN'T HEAR/SEE MY TEACHER (or teacher can't hear/see you):

  1. Check if the device volume is unmuted and on. Sometimes students mute using the device volume rather than the Google Meet volume.

  2. Check the device settings for audio/video input and output.

  3. Check the Google Meet settings. Make sure the input and output for audio/video are correct (click here for how to access the settings menu)

KEYBOARD OR TOUCHSCREEN NOT WORKING:

This is usually a settings issue and can happen sporadically.

  1. Check the settings to verify the regular keyboard and touchpad functions are enabled. The settings menu can be accessed by clicking where the time is, look for the cog on the top right of the menu box.

  2. Clean the screen with a lint-free cloth, like microfiber, and a half & half mix of rubbing alcohol and water. Spray the cloth NOT the device.

  3. Turn off device using the "shut down" menu option (don't just close the screen). Sometimes this is enough to correct the issue.

  4. Preform a "soft reset" by pressing and holding the looped arrow (on the top row of keys) while holding the power button for 10 seconds.

"WAITING FOR HOST"

While we have no waiting room in our Google Meets, some students are running into this issue. Notify your classroom teacher as soon as you can; even though the meet links do not require an invite to use, your teacher can send an invite to your account and it may resolve the problem.

WHY DO I KEEP GETTING DROPPED FROM GOOGLE MEET?

LOTS of schools are utilizing Google Meet right now. There's a chance it could be an error within Google causing the issue, it could also be a problem with your WIFI connection. Does the device work properly the rest of the time (during homework or on other websites)? You may need a hot spot to strengthen your connection-- check in with Mrs. Eastin about getting one from the school.

WE HAVE MULTIPLE STUDENTS ON DEVICES BUT ONLY 1 IS SLOW:

This can happen when several people use the same WIFI. To test if it's a bandwidth/connection try these steps:

  1. Login to the problematic computer first, then the others. See if the issue switches to a different computer.

  2. Have your student sit closer to the router.

**If you continue to have issues, contact Mrs. Eastin about getting a T-Mobile Hot Spot.**

THE SCRIBBLE FUNCTION IN GOOGLE SLIDES NEEDS TO BE CLICKED OVER AND OVER AGAIN:

Many of our younger students have tracing or writing practice but the scribble function needs to be selected after every brush stroke. Consequently, homework can take longer than necessary and lead to frustration.

It doesn't completely solve the issue, but there is a work around to make it a little easier. View this step-by-step guide to using

Google docs for your child's writing practice.
