FEBRUARY STEM CHALLENGES

BOUQUET CHALLENGE

Create a unique bouquet of flowers to give to your Valentine.

Constraints:  minimum of 3-6 stems

Materials:  tissue paper, wrapping paper, cardstock, index cards, foil, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, string, straws, scissors, masking tape 

VALENTINE LAVA LAMP CHALLENGE

Make a lava lamp for a loved one.

Constraints:  follow the steps in the video

Materials:  vegetable oil, water, empty bottle or jar, Alka Seltzer, food coloring, glitter, confetti

CUPID'S BOW CHALLENGE

Build a bow for Cupid to use to launch his arrows .  See how far you can get the arrow to fly! 

Constraints:  no sharp or point objects

Materials:  tape, craft sticks, straws, rubber bands, string, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, measuring tool 

Build a container to hold a cupcake or cookie.

Constraints:   build the SMALLEST possible container

Materials:  cardboard/cardstock, paper plates, cereal boxes, Valentine’s cards boxes, etc. craft sticks 7,  pipe cleaners 7

tape (18 in.), scissors, ruler

Go outside and measure your shadow at 3 different times of the day.  (Ex:  9:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 3:00 pm) 

Constraints:  measure from the EXACT SAME SPOT each time

Materials:   chalk, tape measure, yard stick, ruler, string 

WHAT DID YOU NOTICE?  WHY DO YOU THINK THEY ARE DIFFERENT?

Use a sheet or wall and a light to create shadow puppets.  Above is a chart to help you get started. What creatures can you create?  Send us a picture of your creation. 

Constraints:  none

Materials:  sheet, wall, flashlight or other light

Design and create a snowflake.

Constraints:  must be symmetrical, ONLY use lines and hearts

Materials:  paper, cardboard, string, pipe cleaners, construction paper, other materials you find

Design your favorite animal using paper hearts.  Use the ideas above OR come up with your own!

Constraints:  use as many hearts as you can to create your animal

Materials:  construction paper, tag board, markers, crayons, anything else you find that would be useful
