Reading for pleasure helps children develop a life-long love of reading. Important skills are practiced while reading for enjoyment. Please encourage your child to read daily. Click the image to the left for a link to websites offering free e-books. Maybe you and your child will find a book that you would enjoy reading together! See this website for more information on the importance of children reading for at least 20 minutes per day.

Every couple of months I will submit an order to Scholastic Book Club for any family that wishes to purchase books. Click the "Scholastic 100" icon to the left for a link to online ordering. Our class code is RYG6P. Our first order is due by Sept. 29th.

We will use Google Classroom in our classes. Please click on this Parents' Guide to Google Classroom for ways to support your child.

CURRICULUM

The ELA curriculum uses several resources. The cornerstone of the program is "Wonders", by Scott Foresman. Spelling City is used to practice weekly spelling and vocabulary words. IXL is used to provide individualized practice in language arts skills. Various novels and writing resources are also used.

UNITY POEM

Unity

I dreamed I stood in a studio

and watched the sculptors there.

The clay they used was a young child’s mind,

and they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher;

the tools he used were books, and music, and art.

One, a parent with a guiding hand,

and a gentle, loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled,

with touch that was deft and sure,

While the parents labored by his side

and polished and smoothed it o’er.

And when at last their task was done,

they were proud of what they had wrought.

For this thing they had molded in the child

could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed he would have failed

if he had worked alone,

For behind the parent stood the school

and behind the teacher, the home.
